About Shawna

My destiny was set before I was born. Picture this…SMALL town Alberta, 1971. After a difficult pregnancy and being induced 3 weeks past my due date, I was born teeny tiny. Tough times continued for my Mom, and I could not be admitted with her to the hospital. I was too healthy and no longer a newborn (too old at 3 days old!!). So, my bassinet and I went down the ancillary wing of the hospital – the long term care centre of the olden days. And the folks down there took care of my while my Mom got well enough for us to go home.

So, in gratitude for the care older adults provided me when I needed it, it is now my turn to care for you.

Baby Shawna
Head shot

For those who have before me, and cared for me, I honour you with service.

I have done, and will do, whatever is within my power to contribute to the joy, comfort, dignity and integrity of our older adults. I have been, among many other things:

A ‘detective’ when I look into why they are in pain, with the goal of making them more comfortable

An ‘interior designer’ when I needed to keep a treasured scatter rug in front of the sink but minimize it as a tripping hazard, and keeping for them the joy and sentiment that rug brings

A ‘secretary’ when arthritis makes their fingers too painful to dial a phone, to support the dignity that comes with arranging their own appointments

A ‘moderator’ for their integrity knowing that honesty was a priority for them, and their family wanted to protect them from bad news

Allow me now the privilege of supporting our older adults to voice their joy, comfort, dignity and integrity. Then, let me strategize with them to be happy with nothing less.

For those who have come before me and cared for me, I honour you with my service.
